Airport terminal shuttle trains — driverless, automated trains that link a big airport's terminals and concourses — are often the only way to reach your next gate in time during a connection. At major European and Gulf hubs, two aircraft can be several kilometres and a whole terminal apart. 🚆 What is a terminal shuttle train
It's a short, automated rail line (known as an APM — automated people mover) that runs without a driver every 2-4 minutes between terminals or concourses. It looks like a metro but only moves inside the airport, and it's almost always free. When you connect at a big hub, this train is what carries you from your arrival terminal to your departure terminal.
🌍 Which airports have them
- Paris — Charles de Gaulle (CDG): CDGVAL links Terminals 1, 2 and 3
- Frankfurt (FRA): the Sky Line between Terminals 1 and 2
- Zurich (ZRH): the underground Skymetro to the gates
- Dubai (DXB): an automated train between the Terminal 3 concourses
- Doha — Hamad (DOH): an APM connecting the concourses
- London — Heathrow (LHR): free inter-terminal transfers by train and bus
- Istanbul (IST): no train — it's one huge terminal you cross using moving walkways
🎫 Cost and tickets — almost always free
A shuttle train that moves inside the airport is usually free and needs no ticket — just follow the signs for 'Train' or 'Shuttle to gates'. The exception is when you leave the airport entirely (for example a link to the city metro) — then you'll need a city ticket.
When connecting, look for the yellow 'Flight Connections' or 'Transfers' signs — they lead you straight to the train and the right concourse without exiting into the arrivals area.
🛂 Security — do you need to clear it again
This is the key question on a connection. If both flights are within the same 'sterile' transit zone, the train stays inside that zone and you won't re-clear security. But if changing terminals means leaving the zone, you'll go through security — and sometimes passport control — again, which can add 20-40 minutes.

⏱️ How to save time on the transfer
- On arrival, find the 'Connecting flights' screen and note your gate and terminal number
- If you need the shuttle train, head there directly — don't lose time in shops until you reach the second terminal
