A long layover — more than six hours waiting at a connecting airport — frustrates most travellers, but it's really a free chance to see another city. At many big hubs, leaving the airport, exploring the center and getting back in time is entirely doable. This guide shows how to use a layover for a short city tour, what to check in advance, and how to avoid the risk of missing your onward flight.
When it's worth leaving the airport
The main rule is the time math. Once you subtract the trip to the city and back, re-clearing security and a safety buffer, what's left is your actual sightseeing time. You need at least 6-7 hours for leaving to make sense.
Factor in the minimum connection time (MCT) and whether exiting the international zone means clearing security and passport control again. On an 8+ hour layover, leaving almost always pays off.
Essential check: the transit visa
The most important thing is whether you can legally leave. Staying in the airport transit zone often needs no visa, but going into the city counts as entering the country and may require one.
For Georgian travellers: a short visit in Istanbul, Dubai or Doha is straightforward, while leaving a European Schengen hub requires a Schengen visa. See the full transit visa guide.
A transit visa and a regular visa are different things. Before you head into the city on a layover, make sure you have the right to enter the country — otherwise border control will turn you back.
Luggage during a stopover — what to do
If your bags are checked through to the final destination, you need nothing but your carry-on — head into the city freely. If you have to collect your luggage, almost every airport has luggage storage where you can leave a bag for a few hours.
- Leave heavy luggage in an airport locker or storage room
- Carry your passport, boarding pass and phone charger
- Wear comfortable shoes — a short tour means a lot of walking
- Set a reminder for the time to be back at the airport
Best cities for a layover tour
- Istanbul (IST) — Turkish Airlines offers free city tours to passengers on 6+ hour layovers; see the Istanbul guide
- Doha (DOH) — Qatar Airways transit tours and a stunning airport
- Dubai (DXB) — the metro to the center is fast and cheap; a tour fits in 5-6 hours
- Vienna, Warsaw, Munich — Schengen hubs; the center is close to the airport, visa permitting
A practical plan for layover day
Plan your route in advance: 2-3 sights near the airport, one meal and a return at least 3 hours before your flight. Use an eSIM for navigation and check the public transport schedule.
If your connection falls at night and leaving isn't worth it, the overnight layover guide will help you spend the time comfortably in the airport instead. To find flight combinations where the layover is in an interesting city, search on Travel365 flight search.
