Tax-free shopping lets you reclaim part of the VAT (value-added tax) you paid on goods purchased abroad when you leave the country. For a traveler shopping in Europe or Turkey, this is a real saving β often 10-15% of the item's price.
What tax-free is and who qualifies
VAT is already included in the price. Because a non-resident tourist takes the goods out of the country and doesn't consume them there, the law allows that tax to be refunded.
The main condition: you must not be a resident of that country or zone, and you must carry the item out unused and in its packaging. A visitor traveling to the Schengen area as a tourist fully meets this requirement.
How it works β step by step
- At checkout, ask for a tax-free form (Global Blue, Planet) β have your passport ready
- Keep the receipt and the form; leave the item unused until departure
- At the airport, find the Customs / Tax Refund desk before departure
- Get the form validated with a customs stamp (you may be asked to show the goods)
- Receive the refund in cash, to a card or via an app β on the spot or later
Minimum spend by country
Each country sets a minimum amount above which a refund applies (per receipt, per store):
- France: ~β¬100 β shopping in Paris
- Italy: ~β¬70 β Milan and Rome
- Germany: ~β¬50
- Spain: minimum abolished β any amount qualifies
- Turkey: a low minimum, though the process depends on the store
At the airport β where people go wrong
The most common mistake is checking the item into the hold, where customs can't inspect it. If you may be asked to show the goods, don't check that bag until your form is stamped.
Arrive at the airport early β the queue at the customs desk can be long, especially in peak season.
The customs stamp is essential β without it you won't get the refund. Validate the form before you pass into the secure zone.
