You lost your card abroad, it was stolen, or your bank blocked it on suspicion of foreign use β this is one of the most stressful situations in travel, but with a cool head it's resolved quickly. The key is to know the sequence of steps in advance and to have a backup plan, so you're never stranded cashless in an unfamiliar city.
First step β freeze the card
The moment you realize the card is gone, freeze it immediately. Modern banking apps let you do this in seconds β look for a 'freeze' or 'lock' button. If you can't reach the app, call the bank's hotline. This is exactly why it's worth writing down the bank's international number separately before you travel β so you have it even if your phone is lost.
Emergency steps in order
- Freeze the card in the app or call the bank β temporarily at first, while you search
- Check recent transactions β if you see a foreign charge, report it to the bank at once
- If the card is truly lost or stolen β request permanent cancellation and a reissue
- In case of theft, get a police report β you'll need it for insurance and bank disputes
- Save the time of every message and call β it's evidence if a dispute arises
How to get cash without a card
While a new card is being sent, you'll still need money. This is where a backup plan saves you: a second card from a different bank, a digital wallet (Apple Pay / Google Pay) that often works without the physical card, or a small cash reserve. As a last resort, a relative can send you money via Wise, Revolut or an international transfer service that you cash out locally.
When traveling, always carry two cards from different networks (Visa + Mastercard) and keep them apart β one in your wallet, one in your bag. Then losing one is no longer a disaster. Details are in the travel money cards guide.
Prevention β prepare in advance
- Before you travel, tell your bank about the trip β this cuts the risk of an automatic block abroad
- Write down the bank's international hotline separately, independent of your phone
- Add the card to a digital wallet β you can still pay if you lose the physical one
- Keep a small cash reserve in euros or dollars β for currency exchange tips see the separate guide
- Store photos of your documents and cards in secure cloud storage β as recommended in the travel documents organization guide
If your passport is lost too
Sometimes a bag theft takes both the card and the passport. For a passport, a separate procedure applies β contacting the embassy abroad and getting an emergency document. The full instructions are in the lost passport guide. In both cases, the key is calm and the right order of steps.
Reliable travel insurance often covers theft-related costs and emergency cash delivery β check this clause specifically when buying a policy.
