Kotor is a medieval town on Montenegro's Adriatic bay, part of the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1979. There is usually no direct flight from Tbilisi to Kotor, so the route is built with a connection or through nearby airports. This guide explains the route, sights and budget.
✈️ How to get there from Tbilisi
The nearest airport is Tivat (TIV), about 8 km away. Alternatives are Podgorica (TGD), about 90 km away, or Dubrovnik (DBV), about 70 km away. Routes change by season, so check flights on the price calendar. For Podgorica see Tbilisi to Podgorica: Montenegro's Capital Guide, and for the Dubrovnik transfer see Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) → City Center: 2026 Guide.
🏰 The old town
Kotor's old town is surrounded by walls and greets you with narrow streets, squares and churches. The Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is the main sight. Cars do not enter the town, so you walk and will need comfortable shoes.
🪜 St. John's Fortress
The path up to the fortress has over a thousand steps and the top gives a view of the whole bay. Entry costs about €15 (≈$17), and you should check the exact amount on site. Climbing early in the morning is easier because the day gets hot.
Bring water and consider an evening climb. The path can be slippery on the way down.
🌊 The bay and nearby places
- Perast — a small Baroque town along the bay
- Budva — Montenegro's popular coastal town
- A route around the Bay of Kotor by car or boat
- Lovćen National Park above Kotor
💰 Budget
- Hotel: 3★ about $50-95/night
- Food: a main dish in a restaurant $9-16
- Transport: a Kotor-Budva bus about $3-4
- Sights: the fortress and museum have separate tickets
💡 Practical tips
The best periods are May-June and September, when it is warm but less crowded. In summer the old town gets packed because of cruise ships. Montenegro uses the euro, and entry rules change over time, so check official sources before departure. For similar Balkan destinations see Tbilisi to Ohrid and Tbilisi to Split.
