Istanbul Airport (IST) opened in 2018 and is now one of Europe's busiest aviation hubs. Turkish Airlines operates more than 300 routes from IST. Most Georgian travelers pass through IST on connections to Europe, making it essential to understand how the airport works — from transit to lounges and city transport.
IST: Key Facts
- IATA: IST; ICAO: LTFM
- Distance from city: 35 km north-west of Istanbul
- Single mega-terminal — the largest in Europe
- Old Atatürk Airport (ISL code) is a separate facility 35 km away
- Operations: 24/7
IST (new Istanbul Airport) and ISL (former Atatürk Airport) are two separate airports. Always check the IATA code on your ticket.
Transit at IST: Step by Step
Arriving from Tbilisi (TBS) you land airside in the Pier network. Connections to Schengen countries or other Turkish Airlines flights generally do not require clearing passport control.
- Follow the yellow Transfer / Connecting Flights signs as soon as you deplane
- The transfer hall is enormous — allow 20-30 minutes to reach distant gates
- Airside transfer requires only your boarding pass, not your passport
- 3+ hours between flights? A lounge or Duty Free visit is well worthwhile
How Much Transfer Time Do You Need?
- 1.5 hours — Turkish Airlines' official minimum connection time
- 2–2.5 hours — comfortable transfer in all normal situations
- 3+ hours — time to use a lounge or browse Duty Free
- 6+ hours — the IST Hotel inside the terminal is a convenient rest option
On Turkish Airlines connecting tickets, baggage transfers automatically to your final destination. On other carriers' tickets, confirm bag transfer status at the Transfer Desk.
Lounges at IST
- Turkish Airlines CIP Lounge — Business class + Miles&Smiles Elite; both Schengen and non-Schengen sides
- Primeclass Lounge — Dragon Pass, Priority Pass, Visa Infinite; pay-per-entry approximately $38
- Goldmark Lounge — less crowded alternative; pay-per-entry approximately $28
Transport to Istanbul City Centre
- Metro M11 → Gayrettepe: ~35 minutes, approximately $1.20 — fastest option (opened 2024)
- Havaist bus → Taksim/Kadıköy: 45-55 minutes, approximately $2.50
- BiTaksi/Taxi → city centre: $45-70; BiTaksi app is more reliable than street taxis

Duty Free and Dining
Unifree Duty Free at IST is reportedly Europe's largest, with prices 15-25% below the European average on perfume, electronics and tobacco. Over 70 restaurants are available airside: Turkish Kebab, Starbucks, McDonald's, and local buffets. On layovers of 8+ hours, ask at the Turkish Airlines Transfer Desk about the Touristanbul programme — it can provide a free hotel night or a city tour.
