Renewing a Georgian passport is a simple process if you plan ahead β an expired passport discovered at the last minute will derail an entire trip. This guide explains when to renew, where, how fast, at what cost and with which documents it's done.
β° When to renew
Renew your passport in good time β many countries require at least 6 months of validity remaining on arrival. This is the so-called six-month rule; see Passport Validity: The 6-Month Rule You Must Know.
A practical tip: renew your passport 8-9 months before it expires if you plan to travel. That way you avoid the situation where you've already bought a ticket but the passport is no longer usable.
ποΈ Where and how to renew
Passports are issued by the Public Service Development Agency (sa.gov.ge). You can file the application at a House of Justice, a Public Service Hall or a territorial office of the agency anywhere in the country.
The process happens on the spot: you fill in the application, they capture your biometric data (photo, signature, fingerprint) and you pay the fee. For more on biometric passports see Biometric Passport in Georgia: Getting One for Travel.
π° Cost and turnaround
- 10 working days β the cheapest rate (from around $26)
- 5 working days β a mid-tier, expedited rate
- 1-2 working days β expedited, more expensive (β$55-75)
- Same day β the fastest and priciest option (up to ~$110)
- A child's passport often has a reduced rate
π Documents you'll need
For a standard renewal, an ID card or your old passport is usually enough. If your documents are in order, the process is done in 10-15 minutes.
- A valid ID card or your old passport
- Proof of fee payment (you pay on site)
- A biometric photo β taken on site, no need to bring one
- For a minor β parental consent and a birth certificate
Always verify the current rates and turnaround on the official site sa.gov.ge or the hotline β the fees change from time to time.
π Renewing abroad
If you're abroad and your passport is running out, contact a Georgian embassy or consulate β they accept the application, though production takes longer because the document is made in Georgia.
If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, that's a different procedure β step by step, see Lost your passport abroad β what to do step by step.
With a renewed passport you can now apply for a Schengen visa and plan your trip. Search flights and compare prices on Travel365's price calendar.
