An International Driving Permit (IDP) is the official translation of your Georgian driver's license that confirms your right to drive in other countries. If you plan to rent a car abroad, this document is often mandatory β let's see where you need it and how to get one in Georgia.
What an IDP is and where you need it
An IDP is not a standalone document β it only works alongside your national license and translates it into several languages. It's based on the 1949 and 1968 conventions, which different countries recognize.
In many European countries a Georgian license is enough for short stays, but rental companies and police often ask for the IDP. In the US, Canada and parts of Asia it's practically mandatory.
How to get one in Georgia
The IDP is issued by the Service Agency (sa.gov.ge). The process is simple and usually completed the same day:
- Have a valid Georgian driver's license
- Visit a Service Agency branch or use the online service
- Submit a photo and pay the fee
- Receive the IDP booklet β usually on the spot
Cost and validity
The IDP fee in Georgia is low β around $12-20 (check the current rate at the agency). Validity is usually 1-3 years, but countries recognize it only within the validity of your national license.
Plan ahead β get the IDP a few days before your flight so you're not stuck at the last minute.
An IDP does not grant driving rights on its own β always carry both: your national license and the IDP. Without either, the rental company won't hand over the car.
How it connects to car rental
The IDP is just one part of renting a car. Age, a deposit card and insurance are separate issues β see Renting a car abroad for the full picture.
Also make sure you have valid travel insurance to cover unexpected costs on the road.
Practical tips
- Keep a copy of the IDP on your phone too, in case you lose the original
- Check which convention your destination country recognizes
- For currency and the deposit, see the currency exchange guide
- Plan your flight and travel dates with Travel365's price calendar
Some rentals don't formally require the IDP, but not having it during a police check can cost you a fine β better to have it.
