Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) sits about 35 km south of central Amman — one of the more distant airports among capital cities. There's no metro or rail link to the airport, so the choice comes down to bus or taxi.
🚕 Ways into the center
- Airport Express bus → Tabarbour (North) bus station: 45-60 min, ~$4
- Official yellow taxi (fixed fare or meter) → center: 35-45 min, ~$15-19
- Careem (the dominant ride-hailing app in Jordan) → center: 35-45 min, ~$13-17
- Pre-booked hotel shuttle → straight to your hotel, ~$17-22
🚌 Airport Express — the official bus
Run by JETT, the official bus leaves regularly from the arrivals hall exit and heads to Tabarbour bus station, north of the center. Buy a ticket at the terminal counter or on board; there's dedicated luggage space.
- From Tabarbour, it's another ~10-15 minutes by taxi into the center
- Buses run roughly every 30-60 minutes during the day, less frequently at night
🚖 Taxi and Careem
Official yellow taxis have a meter, though a fixed fare from the airport can often be agreed on beforehand — ask the driver for both options before getting in. Careem, Jordan's Uber-equivalent, is the most common and transparent alternative, showing a fixed price upfront.
Don't agree to a ride from an unofficial driver approaching you in the arrivals hall — always use the official taxi rank or the Careem app to see the price in advance.
💡 Tips
- Exchange a small amount of Jordanian dinars (JOD) at the airport — the bus ticket and initial taxi costs are often cash-only
- Activate a SIM or eSIM in advance so Careem works from the moment you land
- For day trips to Petra or the Dead Sea, renting a car from the center is the most flexible option
