Crossing a border with a rental car in Europe isn't always as free as it looks. Moving within the Schengen area is normally no issue, but leaving for non-EU Balkan countries (Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania) often means some rental companies require extra insurance and separate written permission. This guide covers what to check before you finalize a booking.
🇪🇺 Inside the Schengen area
A rental car can move freely between EU and Schengen countries — you usually don't need extra insurance or paperwork. The difference between Schengen and the EU is explained in the Schengen vs. EU countries guide.
⚠️ Where extra insurance is required
- Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Albania — a Green Card insurance document is often required
- United Kingdom — post-Brexit, crossing the border needs a separate check with the rental company
- Ukraine and Moldova — most European rental companies simply don't allow their cars into these countries at all
Many budget rental companies never mention border-crossing restrictions during booking — always ask directly about their cross-border policy before your card is charged.
📄 Green Card insurance
A Green Card is the international proof-of-insurance document that's often required at the border when entering a non-EU country. Many European rental companies include it automatically for travel within the EU, but require a paid add-on or written confirmation for trips into the Balkans.
- State your exact route and every country you plan to enter at the time of booking
- A Green Card add-on typically costs $16-45 for the full rental period
- Keep a copy of the document in the car — border officers often ask for a printed version
🛣️ Vignettes and road tolls
Many European countries charge a separate road toll (vignette) that isn't included in the rental price.
- Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Hungary — a separate vignette purchase is required
- A one-day Austrian highway vignette costs around $27-32; a full-year one is considerably more
- See details in the European highway vignette guide
✅ Practical tips
- Always list every country you plan to enter at the time of booking — it's the only way to learn the extra cost upfront
- Check whether you need an international driving permit for a specific country in the IDP guide
- Ask separately about one-way drop-off fees in another country — they can run into the hundreds of dollars
- At the border, carry both your Green Card and your full rental agreement to show the inspector
