Legroom on a plane matters most on long flights, and the key measure is seat pitch — the distance from a point on one seat to the same point on the seat in front or behind, measured in inches. The bigger the pitch, the more room for your knees.
📏 What seat pitch is and typical sizes
In economy on short routes the pitch is often about 28-30 inches (71-76 cm), and on medium and long routes 30-32 inches. In premium economy it grows to 36-38 inches. The exact figure depends on the airline and cabin layout, so even the same aircraft model can have a different pitch.
↔️ Seat width vs pitch
Pitch measures depth, while seat width is a separate figure, usually around 17-18 inches in economy. Both together decide your comfort, so judging by pitch alone does not give the full picture.
🔎 Where to find exact data
- SeatGuru and AeroLOPA show the seat map and pitch for a specific flight
- Airline websites often list the pitch in the fare descriptions
- Compare rows with each other during seat selection when you book
- Find out the aircraft type in advance, for example A320 or Boeing 737
💺 Where the most room is
The most space is often in the exit row and the bulkhead seats, though both come with restrictions. See all the rules in Exit Row Seating: More Legroom and the Rules to Know. For a comparison of the window and the aisle, see Window vs Aisle Seat: Where to Sit on a Plane.
Bulkhead seats have no seat in front of you, but your carry-on must go in the overhead bin, because there is no floor space for it in front of you.
💰 Is paying extra worth it
On some airlines an extra-legroom seat costs roughly $17-70 more than a standard one. That is often worth it only on flights longer than 4 hours. If your budget allows, also look at Premium economy: is it worth paying extra?. For general seat tips, see Airplane Seat Selection: How to Choose the Best Seat.
🧘 If space is still tight
- Stand up and walk every 1-2 hours, especially on a long flight
- Place your carry-on so that you keep room for your feet
- Pick an aisle seat if you want to move around
- Wear loose shoes, since feet can swell during a flight
