The airport body scanner is the security step that raises the most questions among travelers. In a few seconds it checks whether you are carrying a prohibited item under your clothes. It is now standard at most modern European and Middle Eastern airports, so it helps to know what to expect.
π How the scanner works
The most common type is the millimeter-wave scanner. It uses no X-rays and detects objects hidden under clothing. Modern models do not show a real image of your body β the officer sees only a generic figure with suspicious areas highlighted.
π§ How to clear the scanner fast
- Empty your pockets completely β phones, keys, paper and coins often trigger the scanner
- Put belts, heavy bracelets and large metal accessories in your bag beforehand
- Stand exactly where the officer shows you and raise your arms as instructed
- Very loose or heavily layered clothing can cause false alerts, so simple outfits work best
β οΈ Why the scanner alerts
An alert does not always mean a problem. The most common causes are small items left in a pocket, folds in clothing, sweat, hair clips or decorative elements on clothes. In that case an officer checks only the highlighted area by hand.
A pat-down is a routine procedure, not a sign of suspicion. Stay calm and follow the officer's instructions β screening will finish faster.
π©Ί Health, pregnancy and implants
If you have a pacemaker, an insulin pump or another medical device, tell the officer before screening begins. You will usually be offered an alternative check. The same applies to pregnant travelers and parents traveling with small children.
β You can choose a manual search
At most airports you can ask for a manual search instead of the scanner. It is usually carried out by an officer of the same gender, and you can request a private area if you prefer. It takes a little longer, so arrive at the airport early.
