A transit visa — officially an Airport Transit Visa (ATV) — is one of the most confusing concepts for Georgian travellers. You book a flight with a stopover in Frankfurt or London and immediately wonder: do I need a visa just to change planes? Travel365 answers every question.
The key principle
You only need a transit visa if:
- You pass through immigration or border control in the transit country
- That country requires an ATV for holders of your passport
- If you stay in the international airside zone the entire time (no passport control), most countries do not require a transit visa
Georgian passport — visa-free transit hubs
- 🇹🇷 Turkey (IST, SAW, ADB): visa-free for Georgians under the 90/180-day rule; you can also exit the airport and explore the city freely
- 🇦🇪 UAE (DXB, AUH, SHJ): visa-free for Georgians; transit stays up to 96 hours without a visa
- 🇩🇪 Germany (FRA, MUC): Schengen zone — Georgian biometric passport holders enter visa-free under 90/180-day rule, including transit
- 🇦🇲 Armenia (EVN): visa-free; transit is completely unrestricted
- 🇶🇦 Qatar (DOH): visa-free for Georgians; 48-96 hour transit without a visa (Qatar Airways passengers receive Doha stopover discounts)
Where Georgians need a visa for transit
- 🇬🇧 UK (LHR, LGW, MAN): Georgian citizens require a Direct Airside Transit Visa (DATV) — separate from a standard UK visa; apply online for £35
- 🇺🇸 USA (all airports): a B1/B2 visa is required even for transit — Georgians are not in the ESTA program and must apply for a full visa
- 🇨🇦 Canada: eTA or visa required for transit; Georgians need a visa
- 🇦🇺 Australia: transit visas required for many nationalities — check the DIBP official website
Multi-stop itineraries
If your journey includes two stopovers, check each country's requirements separately. A Tbilisi-London-New York itinerary, for example, requires both a UK DATV and a US B1/B2 visa — both must be valid before you board.
Exiting the airport equals entry: if you leave the transit zone to visit a hotel or the city, that counts as a full entry and requires that country's regular visa, not just an ATV.
ETIAS — new European transit requirement?
ETIAS launches in the second half of 2026 — an online travel authorisation for the 30+ Schengen-area countries, costing €7 for a 3-year validity. This will apply to Georgian citizens transiting through Schengen airports too. See Travel365's ETIAS 2026 guide for all the details.
