Doha's Hamad International (DOH) is Qatar Airways' hub and one of the highest-rated airports in the world, topping Skytrax rankings for years. If you're flying from Tbilisi to Asia, Africa or Australia via Doha, this guide covers everything you need for the transit — connections, lounges, baggage and getting into the city.
DOH: key facts
- IATA: DOH; opened in 2014, replacing the old Doha International
- Just ~7 km from the city center — one of the closest major airports to its downtown
- Qatar Airways' main hub; operates 24/7
- Famous for art installations — the 7-metre Lamp Bear and the tropical indoor garden, The Orchard
- Fast, free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal
DOH is known as a "silent airport" — there are no loud boarding announcements. Check your departure time and gate yourself on the screens or in the app.
Transiting at DOH: step by step
Qatar Airways flies TBS–DOH direct in about 3.5 hours. On arrival you land airside, and the transfer to your onward flight usually happens without passport control.
- Follow the Transfer / Connecting Flights signs — you'll clear security again
- The terminal is large but compact — 10–15 minutes to the farthest gates
- No passport needed airside — your boarding pass is enough
- For a 3+ hour layover — a lounge, The Orchard garden or Duty Free
How much connection time you need
- 60 min — Qatar Airways' official minimum connection time
- 90 min — a comfortable transfer in most cases
- 3+ hours — enough to enjoy a lounge or the garden
- 8+ hours — the Oryx Airport Hotel inside the terminal for a rest
On a Qatar Airways through-ticket your baggage is checked to the final destination automatically. If you switch to another airline, confirm the baggage status at the Transfer Desk.
Lounges at DOH
- Al Mourjan Business Lounge — Qatar Airways business class and oneworld Sapphire; two large lounges
- Al Safwa First Lounge — first class; one of the most luxurious in the world
- Priority Pass lounges — pay-per-entry options are also available
- Oryx Airport Hotel — hourly rooms on both the airside and landside
Getting into the city
Doha is close to the airport and easy to reach. Detailed prices, durations and taxi tips are in a separate guide: Doha (DOH) → city center.
- Karwa taxi — official; ~15 minutes to the center
- Doha Metro — the budget option toward downtown

Duty Free, dining and transit tips
DOH's Duty Free is one of the largest in the region — perfume, electronics and local souvenirs. Airside there are 30+ restaurants and cafés, from traditional Arabic to international chains. On a 5+ hour layover Qatar Airways sometimes offers a free Doha City Tour — ask about it at the Transfer Desk.
Check in online before your flight — the steps are in the online check-in guide. If you're connecting via Istanbul, the Istanbul Airport (IST) transit guide will help too. And find a cheap ticket with Travel365's flight search.
The Orchard tropical garden in the heart of DOH is the best place to relax — 300+ trees, a water feature and a calm atmosphere make a long layover far easier.
