Düsseldorf is a modern, lively city on the Rhine in western Germany. A direct flight from Tbilisi is not always available, so the trip is usually planned with one connection and the duration depends on the route. The city is compact, so 2-3 days is enough.
🏛️ Old Town and the Rhine promenade
The Altstadt is the heart of the city: narrow streets, a pedestrian zone and dozens of bars, which is why it is often called the longest bar in the world. The Rhine promenade is ideal for a stroll, especially in the evening. A glass of local Altbier usually costs around $3-4.50 (€3-4).
🏙️ Medienhafen and the Rheinturm
The Medienhafen is a former harbour full of modern architecture, including Frank Gehry's eccentric buildings. The Rheinturm is about 240 metres tall and offers a panorama of the city. For similar views in other cities, see Europe's Best Panoramic Viewpoints: Cities From Above.
The Medienhafen looks best at sunset, when the glass facades glow golden.
🛍️ Königsallee and the parks
The Königsallee, or Kö, is the city's main shopping boulevard with a canal running through the middle. The Hofgarten is a calm park for walking near the centre. If you have time, visit Benrath Palace and its gardens, easy to reach from the centre.
🚆 Nearby cities
Cologne is about half an hour from Düsseldorf by train, so both cities fit easily into one trip. See Tbilisi → Cologne: A Guide to Germany's Cathedral City. For a Netherlands plan, see Tbilisi → Amsterdam: guide to the city of canals.
💶 Budget
Lunch in a mid-range restaurant usually costs around $17-28, while hotels rise sharply during trade fairs. For local transport, see Public Transport Tickets in Europe: A Traveler's Guide.
🗓️ When to go
The best time is May to September, when the Rhine promenade comes alive. In December the Christmas markets make the city special, though the weather is cold.
