Opera and theatre tickets in Europe are only expensive if you buy them in the wrong place. Theatres in Vienna, Prague, Milan and Berlin all have cheaper seats, and buying from the official website protects you from scalpers. This guide shows how to choose a performance, a ticket and what to wear.
🎫 Where to buy tickets
Always buy from the theatre's official website or a verified partner. Tickets typically go on sale 2-3 months ahead — popular performances sell out early. A valid ticket shows the date, seat and a buyer's name or a QR code.
If a ticket has no name and the seller is a stranger, be careful: that is often a sign of a scalper.
Treat "last ticket" sellers on the street or on social media with caution — fake QR codes are a common scam. Buy only through official channels.
🪑 Cheap seats and standing places
Many theatres offer low-cost options: standing places, restricted-view seats and last-minute discounts. At the Vienna State Opera, for example, a standing ticket costs about €15 (≈$17) and goes on sale shortly before the performance — confirm the current price and queue rules on the official website.
Young people and students often get reduced prices — bring ID with you.
👗 What to wear
Strict dress codes are rare, but smart casual is the safe choice: a jacket or a nice shirt and clean shoes. Evening galas call for more formal clothes. Shorts and sportswear are best avoided.
In winter you will need the cloakroom — leaving a coat typically costs $1-3.
⏰ On the day of the show
- Arrive at least 30 minutes early — latecomers are often kept out until the interval
- Switch your phone off or to silent; photos and video are usually banned
- Keep your ticket ready on your phone or printed
- Read the plot beforehand — many operas are sung in the original language with surtitles
- Leave large bags in the cloakroom
