Many countries — especially in equatorial Africa and South America — require arriving passengers to show an International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP), the so-called "yellow card", proving yellow fever vaccination. This can be required either by the destination country itself, or because of a transit stop in an at-risk country. It's a less familiar but very practical issue for Georgian travelers.
🌍 Which countries require it
- Direct requirement — Ghana, Rwanda, DR Congo, Angola and most equatorial countries in East and West Africa
- Transit requirement — some countries require the certificate for passengers merely transiting through an endemic country's airport, even without leaving it
- Requirements change often — always confirm with the IATA Travel Centre or the destination's embassy before booking
💉 Where to get vaccinated in Tbilisi
- Georgia's National Center for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC) is the only official source that issues the ICVP certificate
- Book an appointment by phone or online ahead of your visit — vaccine supply is limited
- Get the vaccine at least 10 days before travel for the certificate to be valid
📋 What the ICVP booklet is
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis is a small yellow booklet recording the vaccination date and an official stamp. It lasts a lifetime and is worth carrying on every trip, even when a specific flight doesn't require it.
⚠️ What happens without a certificate
Without it, a border officer can deny entry, order quarantine, or require on-the-spot vaccination — an unpleasant scenario best avoided by sorting this out before the flight, not at the airport.
Requirements vary by country and change over time — always confirm on the destination's official site before booking your ticket.
