The flight duration shown on your ticket is often longer than the time the plane actually spends in the air, and that is normal. Airlines publish the whole journey β from leaving the departure gate to stopping at the arrival gate. This guide explains why the numbers differ and how to use that knowledge when planning connections.
π What block time means
Block time runs from the moment the aircraft leaves the gate (the blocks are removed) until it stops at the arrival gate. This is the figure in the timetable. It includes taxiing to the runway, takeoff, the flight itself, landing and taxiing to the gate.
Airborne time is usually 20-40 minutes shorter. At large airports taxiing out can take 10-20 minutes, and taxiing in after landing another 5-10 minutes.
π Why timetables include a buffer
Airlines build schedules with a small reserve. If a schedule were based on the exact average, roughly half of all flights would count as late. As a result, flights frequently arrive earlier than the printed time β especially in the morning, when traffic is light.
This means arrival times are not exact in either direction. Landing 10-20 minutes early or late is entirely ordinary.
Times on a ticket are always local β departure time at the departure airport, arrival time at the arrival airport. Time-zone differences change how the duration looks on paper.
π¬οΈ Wind, routing and direction
The same route can be scheduled with different durations in each direction. The reason is the wind at cruising altitude: flying east, a tailwind pushes the aircraft along; flying west, a headwind slows it down.
On short flights the difference is small, but on long-haul routes it can reach dozens of minutes. The aircraft type matters too β the same route on a different model is slightly different.
π How to use this when connecting
- For minimum connection time (MCT), count from the arrival gate, not from touchdown
- At large hubs (Istanbul, Doha, Dubai) moving between terminals needs 20-40 minutes β see Minimum Connection Time (MCT): How Much Time You Need
- If you booked two separate tickets, leave at least 3 hours as a buffer
- Plan onward transport from the scheduled arrival time, not from the moment you expect to land
π§ Planning your travel day
Plan your airport arrival early β How Early to Arrive at the Airport: A 2026 Guide shows how to calculate it. The difference between boarding and departure times is explained in Boarding Time vs Departure Time: What's the Difference.
Takeoff time is not exact either: if a flight leaves a bit late, it is often a minor technical delay and some of that time is made up in the air.
Plan your connecting route too and search flights in Travel365's flight search β the price calendar shows the cheapest days.
