Granada sits in southern Spain at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, and the Alhambra fortress-palace makes it one of Europe's best-known cities. There is no direct flight from Tbilisi, so the route usually has one connection — in Madrid, Barcelona or Istanbul. Here is everything you need to plan the trip.
✈️ How to get there from Tbilisi
Granada's own airport (GRX) is small and has limited flights. Often it is easier to fly into Málaga and continue by bus: the ride takes about 1.5-2 hours and a ticket costs $13-17. Read about Málaga in Tbilisi → Málaga: the Costa del Sol guide.
From Madrid to Granada the train or bus takes about 4-5 hours. If you are combining Spanish cities, see Tbilisi → Madrid: Complete Spain Travel Guide 2026.
🏰 The Alhambra — book ahead
The Alhambra is a masterpiece of Moorish art: the Nasrid Palaces, the Alcazaba and the Generalife gardens. Most tickets are sold on the official website for timed entry, so in high season they sell out weeks ahead. A general ticket costs roughly €19 (≈$21) — check the current price on the official site.
Entry to the Nasrid Palaces is tied to a specific time slot, so choose it carefully and arrive early.
Buy Alhambra tickets only on the official website or from a verified partner. Tickets from outside sources often cost more and slots run out quickly.
🏘️ The Albaicín and famous views
The Albaicín is Granada's old Moorish quarter, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses. It offers the best view of the Alhambra, especially from the Mirador de San Nicolás at sunset.
The neighbouring Sacromonte district is known for its cave houses and flamenco shows.
🍤 Food and free tapas
Granada is one of the few Spanish cities where many bars bring a free tapa with every drink. This tradition saves money, so look for bars in the center and take advantage of it.
Food prices are moderate: lunch costs $11-17.
🚶 Other sights
- Granada Cathedral and the Royal Chapel — examples of Spanish Renaissance
- The Alcaicería — the old Moorish market
- La Cartuja monastery — Baroque splendor
- Gardens and workshops in the old town
- Concerts and flamenco in the evenings
🗓️ When to go and what to plan
The best time is March-May and September-October, when heat is moderate. In July and August temperatures exceed 35°C. The city is explored on foot, so wear comfortable shoes.
