A connecting (transit) flight is often noticeably cheaper than a direct one. In return, it needs a little more planning so you don't miss your second flight.
How much time is enough to connect
The Minimum Connection Time (MCT) varies by airport and flight type:
- Domestic β domestic: 45 minutes β 1 hour
- International β international: 1.5 β 2 hours
- Different terminal or customs: 2.5 β 3 hours
One ticket or separate tickets
If the whole route is on one ticket, the airline is responsible for a missed connection β they'll rebook you on the next flight for free.
With separate tickets (self-transfer) the risk is yours β if the first flight is delayed, the second ticket is lost.
Wizz Air, Ryanair and other low-cost carriers usually sell separate tickets β the connection is your responsibility. Leave more time.
Baggage in transit
On one ticket, baggage is usually checked through to your final destination. On separate tickets you must collect it, clear customs and check it in again.
Tips for a calm transit
- Choose a longer layover at a familiar or large airport
- Check your terminal on the screens as soon as you land
- Keep your second boarding pass handy
- If you miss the connection β go straight to the airline desk
