A City Card (or City Pass) is a tourist card that bundles attraction entry and public transport into a single price. In the right city it saves you both money and time โ by skipping queues. But it isn't worth it everywhere: in this guide we'll work out when a city card pays off and how to calculate it.
๐๏ธ What's included in a city card
- Free or discounted entry to major museums and attractions
- Public transport (metro, bus, tram) for the validity period
- Skip-the-line access at popular sights
- Discounts on tours, restaurants and shops
- Validity: usually 24, 48, 72 hours or 1-5 days
๐๏ธ Popular city cards
Almost every major European city has its own official card. The best known are:
- Paris Pass / Paris Museum Pass โ Louvre, Versailles and museums
- Roma Pass โ Colosseum + transport + museums
- Budapest Card โ thermal baths, transport, museums
- Vienna City Card / Vienna Pass โ palaces and transport
- Prague Visitor Pass โ castle and transport
- Berlin WelcomeCard and Istanbul Welcome Card โ transport + attractions
๐งฎ How to tell whether it's worth it
Simple math: list the attractions you'll genuinely visit, add up their individual ticket prices and include the transport cost. If the total exceeds the card price โ the card is worth it.
Factor in your own pace: if you see 1-2 places a day and spend more time in cafรฉs and on the streets, individual tickets are often cheaper. An active, "see everything in one visit" style suits a card better.
In many cities museums are free on the first Sunday of the month or at certain hours. Check this before buying a card โ you may not need it at all.
โ ๏ธ What to watch before buying
- Does validity start from first use or from purchase โ clarify it
- Is airport-to-center transport included in the card
- Does skip-the-line really work everywhere or only at some sights
- Is it a digital (in-app) or physical card โ and where you collect it
- Don't buy if half the attractions are already free (parks, churches, viewpoints)
โ๏ธ Pair it with the city guides
Before you buy a card, check the specific city guide โ there you'll see which attractions are must-sees: Tbilisi โ Paris, Tbilisi โ Rome, Tbilisi โ Budapest and Tbilisi โ Prague.
Airport-to-center transport is often separate from the card โ see the airport to city center European guide. Find your flight in the Travel365 flight search.
A city card is a powerful tool if you plan ahead โ calculate your own route and only buy it if you genuinely save.
