Almaty International Airport (ALA) sits about 15-18 km northeast of the city center. The metro doesn't reach the airport, so the choice comes down to bus or taxi — both are reasonably fast and simple.
🚕 Ways into the center
- City bus (route 92 and similar) → center: 40-60 min, ~$0.60-0.80
- Yandex Go taxi → center: 25-35 min, ~$5-7
- InDrive (a local fare-negotiation app) → center: 25-35 min, ~$4-6
- Official taxi at arrivals → center: 25-35 min, ~$7-10 (often a fixed fare)
🚌 Bus — the cheapest option
City buses run to the central stops; buy a ticket from the driver or use an Onay card (the local transit card, sold right at the terminal). Buses run every 15-20 minutes during the day, less frequently at night.
An Onay card also works on trams — worth getting if you're staying in Almaty for more than a day or two.
📱 Yandex Go and InDrive — the easiest option
Uber and Bolt barely operate in Central Asia — Yandex Go is the dominant app, with InDrive as an alternative where you can negotiate the fare with the driver directly. Download both in advance and load a card.
- Pickup zone: right outside arrivals — signage is posted at the terminal
- Pay by card or cash tenge (KZT) — both are accepted
- Fares tick up slightly at night, but not dramatically
🚖 Official taxi
There's an official taxi stand at the terminal, with fares usually posted on a board. Avoid unofficial 'drivers' who approach you directly in arrivals — they often charge 2-3x the real fare.
Don't agree to a ride with a driver who approaches you inside arrivals offering a 'special' price. Always use the official taxi stand or the Yandex Go / InDrive app.
💡 Tips
- Exchange a small amount of tenge (KZT) right at the airport — city-center rates are usually better for the rest
- Activate a SIM card or eSIM before you land — both Yandex Go and InDrive need mobile data
- Check your bags carefully on arrival — the terminal is fairly small and baggage claim is fast
