Cluj-Napoca is one of Romania's most interesting cities, the unofficial capital of Transylvania. It is student-driven, lively and historic, which makes it a great choice if you want somewhere calmer and less visited than Bucharest. Flight options depend on the season, so check the route before you book.
✈️ How to get there from Tbilisi
Cluj Airport (CLJ) is about 10 km from the center. The trip usually involves one connection or a seasonal direct service. For cheap options, check Bucharest or Budapest, see Tbilisi → Bucharest: To Romania's Capital with Wizz Air and Tbilisi → Budapest: The Wizz Air home.
A bus from the airport takes about 30 minutes to the center, and taxis are often cheaper than in Europe's big cities.
🏛️ What to see in the old center
- Saint Michael's Church — a Gothic church on Unirii Square
- Matthias Corvinus House and monument
- Botanical Garden — one of the calmest places in the city
- Citadel Hill — panoramic views over the city
🍽️ Where to eat
Cluj's cuisine is enriched with Transylvanian flavours: sarmale, ciorba and local meat dishes. Restaurants in the center are cheaper than in big cities, so dinner for two is often quite affordable.
🚌 Getting around the city
The center is easy to walk, while buses and trolleybuses serve the rest. For ticket rules, see Public Transport in Europe: Tickets, Validation and Fines.
📅 When to go
The best season runs from May to September, when festivals take place and street cafés fill up. Winter is cold, but the old center is beautiful even then. Two to three days is enough to get to know the city.
Check fares from Tbilisi in the Travel365 price calendar and compare with other Romanian and Balkan cities, for example Tbilisi → Sofia: To Bulgaria's Capital with Wizz Air.
