When you search for a ticket, the same flight often shows several prices — basic, standard, flex. These are fare classes, and the difference is more than price: baggage rules, seat selection and the ability to change your ticket all vary. Picking the right fare class saves you tens of dollars per flight.
What a fare class is
A fare class is a different "package" for selling the very same seat. Physically you sit in the same spot in economy, but what's included in the price (baggage, changes, seat) depends on the fare.
Airlines name these packages differently — Lufthansa has Economy Light/Classic/Flex, Turkish Airlines has EcoFly/ExtraFly, Wizz Air has Basic/Go/Plus. The principle is the same everywhere.
Basic / light — cheapest, most restricted
The basic or light fare offers the lowest price but minimal rights. Usually only one small personal bag is included; checked baggage and seat selection are paid extras, and changing the ticket is either banned or expensive.
This fare is ideal if you travel light and your dates are fixed. Traveling with hand luggage only turns a basic fare into real savings.
Standard / classic — the sweet spot
The standard fare usually includes checked baggage, free seat selection and the option to change your ticket (sometimes for a fee). It costs more than basic, but if you need baggage anyway it often ends up cheaper than basic plus a separate bag.
Before you pick a fare, calculate the final price including baggage — more on this in the low-cost airline tips and the ancillary fees guide.
Flex — maximum flexibility
The flex fare is the most expensive, but you can change the ticket freely without a penalty, often get a refund, and baggage is fully included. It suits business trips or times when your dates aren't fully confirmed.
For a tourist with a fixed plan, flex is often an unnecessary cost.
On the same flight the gap between fares can be $30-60 — always compare what's included in each price, not just the number.
How to choose and save
- Travel light → basic plus carry-on is the best combo
- Need checked baggage → compare standard versus basic plus a separate bag
- Dates might change → flex is worth it when the chance of a change is high
- Always read what's in the price — baggage, seat, changes
- Compare prices on Travel365's price calendar and grab a cheap day
On low-cost flights a priority or Plus package often includes a large cabin bag and early boarding — if you need baggage anyway, the package is cheaper than buying each extra separately.
